dolly sods | monongahela national forest

after months of being in the city - of tearing apart a house, putting it back together, being surrounded by noise and light and people and cars - our memorial day weekend trip was... awesome

we traveled to the dolly sods wilderness, which is part of the monongahela national forest.

we weren't able to leave pgh until after work friday and knew we wouldn't arrive before dark [thus making a hike into the woods rather difficult]. per suggestion from a friend, our first night was spent at a hostel in thomas, wv.  i grew up in a small town - this town is smaller. but totally awesome. we had pizza from a local brick oven pizza place, played pool in the hostel common area, and collapsed into our [one-hundred percent affordable] beds. saturday morning, before hitting the road for our last half hour of driving before the dolly sods, we went to tip top coffee. i drank [one of the best] pour overs i've had in my life and we ate a yam brownie.

indulgent, yes... and then came the wilderness... which was still indulgent in a way?

how often do we lock our phones and wallets in the glove box and forget about them? How often do we go on a six mile hike up a mountain? not often, and that is why it felt indulgent.

our good friends justin and elya are living with us for the summer and we have been having a total blast. we always joke that we are their personal photographers (they tend to be subjected to our photographing them quite often, but don't mind as they say 'we never have photos taken of ourselves').

the dolly sods are beautiful. SATURDAY WE STARTED IN THE SOUTHERN TIP, HIKED INTO THE WOODS, SET UP CAMP, THEN HIKED SOME MORE. ORIGINALLY WE WEREN'T PLANNING TO STAY SUNDAY NIGHT, BUT THEN THE FORECAST CHANGED AND WE DECIDED 'WHAT THE HECK! WHY NOT!'. AFTER A QUICK TRIP TO THE GAS STATION*** FOR SOME FOOD [ICE CREAM AND DORITOS] WE DROVE TO THE NORTHERn TIP AND DID IT ALL OVER AGAIN. SO GREAT. THEN WE WENT TO BED AT 8:30. BEST. VACATION. EVER.
